Why The Bayou Progressive?
Because Louisiana isn't politically monolithic — and its journalism shouldn't be either.
Louisiana is frequently described as a deeply conservative state, and its Republican dominance in statewide politics is an undeniable political reality.
But electoral outcomes do not tell the whole story of Louisiana's people.
Across the state, substantial communities of Democratic, progressive, moderate, and independent voters hold perspectives that are often missing from the dominant political narrative. Their priorities, concerns, and political experiences deserve consistent attention — not just occasional acknowledgment during major elections.
We believe the state's media landscape has too often treated conservative political dominance as a reason to center conservative political perspectives, rather than as one part of a much more complicated political story.
The Bayou Progressive challenges that assumption.
We are not here to manufacture a competing political reality or provide comforting narratives for one side. We are here to expand the scope of political journalism in Louisiana by taking seriously the people, issues, and political possibilities that too often go underexamined.
That includes asking difficult questions about entrenched power, examining political decisions beyond their public justifications, and recognizing that the future of Louisiana politics is not necessarily predetermined by its recent past.
We are not a political party, campaign organization, or advocacy arm. We are a journalism platform with a distinct editorial focus and an independent responsibility to our readers.
And while our perspective on what deserves coverage may distinguish us from other outlets, the standard by which we judge our work should be familiar to anyone who values journalism: Is it accurate? Is it informative? Is it fair to the facts? Does it help people better understand their world?
That's why we exist.
