Editorial Independence & Disclosure
Readers deserve to know whether meaningful relationships or outside interests could influence our coverage.
We disclose close, recent or consequential personal, political and financial relationships when a reasonable reader would consider them relevant. Routine acquaintances and general political agreement do not ordinarily require disclosure.
Active paid work for a subject of coverage is a material conflict. A contributor with that conflict should not independently direct or produce news coverage of that client or its immediate political interests. We may assign independent coverage, seek additional editorial review or explain the relationship in a disclosure.
No candidate, party, donor, advertiser or client is entitled to favorable coverage or protection from scrutiny. Financial support does not purchase editorial influence, and paid promotional content will be clearly identified.
Disclosures may appear in an article, an editor’s note or another prominent location. We welcome questions about conflicts and review concerns in good faith.
We serve a particular audience. We do not serve the political interests of any particular candidate, party, organization, or individual.

At The Bayou Progressive, we believe readers deserve to know not only what we're reporting, but also whether meaningful relationships or outside interests could influence our coverage.
We are an independent, grassroots news outlet operating within Louisiana's closely connected political and civic communities. Our contributors may have longstanding relationships with elected officials, candidates, advocates, community leaders, and organizations that become subjects of our reporting.
We do not believe that knowing someone, having political opinions, or participating in civic life automatically prevents a journalist from producing accurate, fair, and independent reporting.
We do believe those relationships come with responsibilities.
Our commitment is to be transparent about meaningful conflicts of interest, maintain editorial independence, and ensure our readers have the information necessary to evaluate our work.
Political and Personal Relationships
The Bayou Progressive's founder and contributors may have personal, professional, or political relationships with individuals involved in the stories we cover.
These connections can provide valuable institutional knowledge and a deeper understanding of Louisiana politics. They can also create actual or perceived conflicts of interest.
When a relationship is sufficiently close, recent, or consequential that a reasonable reader would consider it relevant to evaluating our coverage, we will disclose it.
This may include close personal friendships, significant past campaign involvement, paid professional relationships, or other meaningful connections to the subjects of our reporting.
Routine professional acquaintances, previous interviews, attendance at public events, or general agreement with a person's political positions do not ordinarily require disclosure.
The presence of a relationship does not automatically prevent coverage. When appropriate, we may use another reporter or editor, seek independent review, or explain the relationship directly within the story.
Our obligation is to the accuracy and integrity of the reporting, not to protecting the reputation or political interests of people we know.
Political Activity and Outside Work
The Bayou Progressive is not affiliated with a political party or campaign and does not operate as a communications arm for candidates, elected officials, or political organizations.
We recognize that individuals involved with the outlet may also participate in political campaigns, community organizations, nonprofit work, or professional consulting outside their journalistic responsibilities.
These activities must not dictate the outlet's reporting.
Active paid work for a candidate, campaign, political organization, or other subject of coverage constitutes a material conflict of interest. A contributor with such a conflict should not independently direct or produce news coverage of that client or its immediate political interests.
When appropriate, coverage may be assigned to an independent contributor, subjected to additional editorial review, or accompanied by a disclosure that clearly explains the relationship.
We distinguish between personal political participation and editorial decision-making. Our contributors may hold political views, but those views do not excuse factual inaccuracies, selective presentation of evidence, or preferential treatment of political allies.
Editorial Independence
Coverage decisions at The Bayou Progressive are based on newsworthiness, public interest, relevance to our audience, and available reporting resources.
No candidate, elected official, political party, donor, advertiser, client, or outside organization is entitled to favorable coverage, editorial approval, or protection from scrutiny.
Likewise, personal disagreement with an individual or organization is not sufficient grounds for unfavorable reporting.
We may choose to examine particular policies, political movements, institutions, or public officials more closely because of their significance to our audience. But the facts, evidence, and relevant context must guide the substance of our reporting.
Interview subjects and other sources are not ordinarily permitted to approve articles, determine editorial conclusions, or require the removal of accurate information as a condition of coverage.
Financial Relationships and Support
The Bayou Progressive operates independently of corporate media ownership and seeks to maintain a clear separation between financial support and editorial decision-making.
Advertising, sponsorships, donations, or other financial contributions do not purchase favorable news coverage or influence editorial conclusions.
Paid promotional content, if accepted, will be clearly identified and distinguished from independent reporting.
We will disclose material financial relationships when they are directly relevant to a story, and we will not knowingly conceal a financial interest that could reasonably call our editorial independence into question.
Reporting on Friends, Colleagues, and Political Allies
We recognize that covering Louisiana politics sometimes means reporting on people with whom we have longstanding relationships or shared political experiences.
We will not automatically exclude those individuals from coverage, nor will we treat personal familiarity as evidence of wrongdoing or improper influence.
We will, however, apply the same factual standards to people we know and respect as we apply to those with whom we disagree.
That includes asking difficult questions, examining competing claims, reporting unfavorable information when supported by the facts, and acknowledging significant conflicts when they exist.
Personal relationships should neither guarantee favorable coverage nor invite an exaggerated effort to appear critical.
Our responsibility is to report what is true and relevant, regardless of whom it benefits.
Transparency and Accountability
When a material conflict of interest exists, The Bayou Progressive will seek to disclose it in a clear, accessible manner.
Disclosures may appear within an article, in an editor's note, or in another prominent location appropriate to the circumstances.
We will also make reasonable efforts to distinguish news reporting from analysis, commentary, and opinion, so readers understand the nature of the content they are consuming.
If readers believe a material relationship or conflict has not been adequately disclosed, we welcome questions and will review those concerns in good faith.
Our commitment to transparency is not a claim that we are free from personal perspectives or relationships. It is a recognition that journalistic credibility depends on being forthright about them.
We serve a particular audience. We do not serve the political interests of any particular candidate, party, organization, or individual.
That distinction is central to our independence and our mission.
