Op-Eds & Editorials

Opinion & Guest Commentary Policy

The Bayou Progressive believes thoughtful commentary, informed debate, and diverse perspectives are essential to understanding Louisiana's political and civic landscape.

In addition to our original reporting and analysis, we occasionally publish opinion pieces, guest columns, and editorials addressing issues of public importance.

Our opinion section provides space for informed perspectives, substantive arguments, and commentary that contributes to a deeper understanding of the issues affecting Louisiana.

We welcome strong opinions. We also expect those opinions to be grounded in an honest representation of the facts.

Editorials, Op-Eds, and Commentary

The Bayou Progressive publishes several forms of opinion and analysis.

Editorials reflect the views and positions of The Bayou Progressive's editorial leadership.

Guest op-eds and commentary reflect the views of their individual authors and do not necessarily represent the positions of The Bayou Progressive, its editors, or its contributors.

Political analysis offers interpretation and context informed by reporting, research, and knowledge of Louisiana politics. While analysis may include informed judgments, it remains subject to our standards for factual accuracy and responsible sourcing.

We strive to clearly distinguish opinion, analysis, and straight news reporting so readers understand the nature of the material they are reading.

Soliciting and Accepting Guest Contributions

The Bayou Progressive generally solicits guest commentary directly from individuals whose experiences, expertise, or perspectives we believe would contribute meaningfully to public discussion.

We may also consider unsolicited opinion submissions when appropriate.

We do not currently maintain a formal open submissions process or guarantee consideration, review, response, or publication of unsolicited material.

Individuals interested in submitting an op-ed or proposing a guest column may contact us at contact@bayouprogressive.com or through our website's contact page.

Submission of an article, proposal, or other material does not create an obligation to publish it.

Editorial Discretion

The Bayou Progressive retains full discretion over which opinion pieces and guest contributions it chooses to publish.

In making those decisions, we may consider the subject's relevance to our audience, the author's knowledge or experience, the originality and quality of the argument, factual accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with our editorial priorities.

We are not obligated to publish a particular viewpoint, provide equal space to opposing positions, or accept a response solely because we have previously published commentary on the same issue.

We may decline a submission for any editorial reason consistent with applicable law, including when the argument is insufficiently developed, the subject falls outside our coverage priorities, or the piece does not meet our publication's standards.

We may also decline submissions without providing a detailed explanation.

We believe editorial independence includes the freedom to decide which conversations our publication will host and which contributions best serve our readers.

Accuracy and Standards

Opinion pieces are intended to express arguments, interpretations, and perspectives. They are not exempt from basic standards of factual accuracy.

We expect contributors to represent factual claims honestly, avoid knowingly false or misleading statements, and distinguish verifiable information from speculation or personal opinion.

Strong criticism of public officials, institutions, policies, and political movements is welcome. However, factual assertions must be reasonably supportable, particularly when they concern identifiable individuals or allegations of misconduct.

We may request sources, additional context, factual clarification, or revisions before agreeing to publish a piece.

We reserve the right to decline material that contains demonstrably false claims, fabricated quotations, plagiarism, undisclosed promotional content, or other material inconsistent with our editorial standards.

Our willingness to publish a perspective should not be interpreted as agreement with that perspective.

Editing and Author Approval

The Bayou Progressive may recommend revisions to guest contributions for clarity, organization, length, accuracy, style, or consistency with our editorial standards.

All edits to guest contributions will be shared with the author for review and approval before publication.

Authors will also have an opportunity to review the complete proposed presentation of their contribution, including its headline, subheadline, accompanying images, captions, and any other editorial elements that materially affect how their work is presented.

We will not knowingly publish a guest contribution in a form the author has not approved.

The Bayou Progressive retains final editorial authority over the content, presentation, placement, and publication of all material appearing on our platforms. If the author and the publication cannot agree on a final version, either party may decline to proceed with publication.

Any substantive changes proposed after an author has approved the final version will be submitted for renewed approval before publication.

Compensation and Paid Placement

The Bayou Progressive does not accept payment in exchange for publishing guest op-eds, editorials, or other opinion contributions.

Payment, advertising purchases, donations, or sponsorships cannot secure publication in our opinion section or influence editorial acceptance decisions.

We also do not currently offer payment to guest opinion contributors.

Guest contributions are considered on their editorial merits, not on the author's financial relationship with the publication.

Any paid promotional content accepted by The Bayou Progressive will be identified as advertising or sponsored material and will not be presented as independent guest commentary.

Author Identification and Disclosure

Guest contributors are generally expected to publish under their own names and provide accurate information about their relevant professional backgrounds or affiliations.

We may require disclosure of financial, political, organizational, or personal interests that are materially relevant to the subject of a contribution.

This includes situations where an author is writing about an organization they represent, a policy they are paid to advocate for, or an issue in which they have a direct financial or professional interest.

Relevant affiliations may be identified in the author's biography or in an accompanying disclosure.

The Bayou Progressive reserves the right to decline contributions when significant conflicts of interest are not adequately disclosed.

Publication and Distribution

Accepted guest contributions may be published on The Bayou Progressive's website and promoted through our associated social media accounts, newsletters, video platforms, or other distribution channels.

We may prepare excerpts, headlines, summaries, and promotional material to help readers discover published contributions, while taking reasonable care to preserve the author's intended meaning.

Publication of a guest contribution does not imply an ongoing contributor relationship or a commitment to publish future submissions.

Press Releases and News Submissions

The Bayou Progressive welcomes press releases, news tips, public announcements, and other information relevant to Louisiana politics, government, public policy, and community affairs.

Candidates, public officials, government agencies, political organizations, advocacy groups, businesses, and members of the public are welcome to share newsworthy developments with our editorial team.

Submitting a press release or news announcement does not guarantee coverage or publication.

We independently determine which announcements warrant coverage based on newsworthiness, relevance to our readers, editorial priorities, and available resources.

When we choose to cover a development brought to our attention through a press release, we reserve the right to independently verify claims, seek additional sources, provide context, interview relevant parties, and determine how the story is written and presented.

We do not ordinarily publish press releases verbatim, and submitting one should not create an expectation that its language, framing, or conclusions will be reproduced in our reporting.

Press releases are treated as source materials, not as substitutes for independent journalism.

News tips, press releases, and other announcements can be sent to contact@bayouprogressive.com or submitted through our website's contact page.

We appreciate receiving information that helps us identify important stories, but we cannot guarantee a response or coverage of every submission.
