About The Bayou Progressive

The Bayou Progressive is an independent Louisiana news outlet focused on politics, public policy, government, and the issues shaping communities across our state.

We exist because too much of Louisiana’s political coverage starts from the assumption that the state is uniformly conservative, Republican, and politically settled. It isn’t.

Hundreds of thousands of Louisianans are Democrats, progressives, independents, moderates, organizers, advocates, union members, public servants, and voters whose priorities and political perspectives are routinely underrepresented in the state’s media landscape. The Bayou Progressive was created to serve that audience with serious journalism — not by telling readers what they want to hear, but by consistently covering the people, policies, debates, and political dynamics that matter to them.

Our reporting is fact-based. We do not begin with a predetermined conclusion and work backward. We follow the facts, provide context, ask difficult questions, and tell readers what we find — even when the answer is complicated or inconvenient.

Having an audience is not the same thing as being an agent for that audience.

We are unapologetic about the subjects we choose to cover and the communities we believe deserve more attention. But our responsibility as journalists is to report accurately, distinguish reporting from opinion, and give readers enough information to understand what is actually happening.

That means going beyond headlines and press releases.

Louisiana politics is shaped by relationships, institutions, money, geography, race, ideology, personalities, electoral incentives, and decades of political history. Understanding a vote at the Capitol, a local election, a campaign announcement, or a new government policy often requires understanding what is happening behind the public talking points.

That is the kind of political journalism we want to provide: accessible without being simplistic, sophisticated without being inaccessible, and candid about the realities of power.

We also believe journalism should meet people where they are.

Not everyone reads a 1,500-word article. Some people watch a full candidate interview on YouTube. Others see a two-minute clip on TikTok, follow breaking developments on social media, listen while driving, or encounter a story through a graphic shared by a friend.

Our goal is to make strong reporting available in as many useful formats and on as many major platforms as our resources allow. The medium may change. The standard should not.

The Bayou Progressive is also proudly grassroots and independent.

We are not a corporate newsroom. We do not have layers of executives, shareholders, or a national media company determining what Louisiana stories deserve attention. We are building this outlet from the ground up because we believe there is value in journalism created by people who actually live here, understand the political landscape, and care deeply about whether Louisiana residents have the information they need to participate in their democracy.

That independence comes with limitations. We do not have the staff or resources of Louisiana’s largest news organizations, and we cannot cover everything.

So we focus.

We prioritize consequential political reporting, elections, public policy, accountability, interviews, analysis, and stories affecting communities that are too often treated as secondary audiences in their own state.

Our mission is straightforward: provide accurate information, meaningful context, and serious political journalism to people who want to better understand Louisiana — and make that journalism as accessible as possible.

No corporate agenda. No party line. No pretending Louisiana politics is simpler than it actually is.

Just journalism for a part of Louisiana that deserves to be covered.
